CENTRE NEWS
Babyland Child Care Centre
The Children and families at our centre have been busy incorporating our Positive Living Skills program into their daily activities in the form of imagery. The children have connected best to illustrations and role modelling. Together, we read various ‘feelings’ books, concentrating on the faces of the characters in the books. Educator simplifies the story line to simple sentences describing what happens on each page so the children gain a better understanding and easily associate simple words such as sad or angry with its corresponding expression. We mimic the looks on the faces of our ‘Feelings’ poster.
Children in each room have been concentrating on our feelings, emotions and relaxation. We have been drawing about how we are feeling, and having group discussions about emotions and feelings. During group time we read books about emotions “when I’m feeling sad, when I’m feeling happy” We have created posters about what makes us happy, sad and angry. We also have been doing some relaxation and meditation as well as yoga. Educators have been going to Yoga classes and brining what they have learnt about the body and mind and incorporating them into our daily program and modifying it for children. As well as listening to guided meditation for children on the iPad and different types of relaxation music and practising different yoga moves to relax the children and allow them to reflect on themselves rather than their stresses. We also have a relaxation and thinking chair where children have been told that they can go and chill out at any time they may be feeling different types of anxiety.
Giggles Early Learning Centre
Natalie Smith our Educational Leader and long standing educator from Giggles Early Learning Centre, Bexley has once again supported this exceptional cause.

Mental health and wellness, Personal Development, Emotional Intelligence And overall skills to become better versions of themselves!!
We wish all our families a safe and happy holiday break and Christmas and we look forward to seeing all our existing and new families in the New Year.
PARENT INFORMATION
Sun Safety
1. Slip on sun protective clothing
Choose clothing that:
- covers as much skin as possible eg. shirts with long sleeves and high necks/collars
- is made from close weave materials such as cotton, polyester/cotton and linen
- if used for swimming, is made from materials such as lycra, which stays sun protective when wet
2. Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen
Make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum and water-resistant. Don’t use sunscreen to increase the amount of time you spend in the sun and always use with other forms of protection too. Apply sunscreen liberally to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before you go outside and reapply every two hours.
3. Slap on a hat
A broad-brimmed, legionnaire or bucket style hat provides good protection for the face, nose, neck and ears, which are common sites for skin cancers. Caps and visors do not provide enough protection. Choose a hat made with closely woven fabric – if you can see through it, UV radiation will get through. Hats may not protect you from reflected UV radiation, so also wear sunglasses and sunscreen.
4. Seek shade
Staying in the shade is an effective way to reduce sun exposure. Use trees or built shade structures, or bring your own! Whatever you use for shade, make sure it casts a dark shadow and use other protection (such as clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen) to avoid reflected UV radiation from nearby surfaces.
5. Slide on some sunglasses
Sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat worn together can reduce UV radiation exposure to the eyes by up to 98 per cent. Sunglasses should be worn outside during daylight hours. Choose close-fitting wrap-around sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard AS 1067. Sunglasses are as important for children as they are for adults.
Be UV aware
Be extra cautious in the middle of the day when UV levels are most intense.
The UV Index tells you the time period in which you need to be SunSmart. It is on the weather page of most daily newspapers and on the Bureau of Meteorology website: www.bom.gov.au/weather/uv
Check skin regularly and see a doctor if you notice any unusual skin changes. If you have a lesion that doesn’t heal, or a mole that has suddenly appeared, changed in size, thickness, shape, colour or has started to bleed, see your doctor immediately. Treatment is more likely to be successful if skin cancer is discovered early.
